Recreation Center renamed in honor of Cathy Mahoney

DOWNERS GROVE, IL - The Downers Grove Park District Board of Park Commissioners has officially approved the renaming of the Downers Grove Recreation Center to the Cathy Mahoney Recreation Center in recognition of Mahoney's outstanding dedication and leadership. The resolution was passed at the February 20 Board Meeting.

Cathy Mahoney was a driving force behind the growth and enhancement of the Downers Grove Park District for over two decades. Her advocacy for the construction of the Recreation Center in 2003 laid the foundation for one of the District's most utilized facilities. She then served on the Board of Commissioners from 2005 to 2023, holding various leadership roles, including Secretary (2005-2007), Treasurer (2007-2019), Vice President (2019), and President (2019-2023).

During her tenure, Mahoney played a key role in numerous transformative projects across the community, including:

  • The completion of the Washington Park playground, shelter, fountain, and ball field seating.
  • The construction of the Veterans Memorial Pavilion at Fishel Park, dedicated in 2012.
  • The Lyman Woods Streambank Stabilization Project, ensuring environmental sustainability.
  • The installation of synthetic turf at Doerhoefer Park in 2006 and 2018.
  • The renovation and completion of the historic 1846 Israel Blodgett House.
  • The renaming of the Belmont Golf Club in addition to major course improvements including clubhouse renovations, a driving range shelter, and a lesson canopy.
  • Navigating the District through the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring continued access to parks and recreation while prioritizing community safety.
  • Two large-scale projects at McCollum Park, including the 2012 Infrastructure Renovation Project and the 2022 Adventure Falls Sprayground, Mini Golf & Sports Courts project.
  • The installation or replacement of 15 playgrounds to enhance community recreation opportunities.
    Leading the District to be recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency in 2022.
  • Championing board transparency through enhanced communication tools, including the BoardPaq online portal, Zoom meetings, and video recordings.

"Cathy Mahoney's unwavering commitment to the Downers Grove Park District has left an indelible mark on our community," said Bob Kotula, president of the Park Board of Commissioners. "Renaming the Recreation Center in her honor is a testament to her dedication and the lasting impact she has made."

New signage reflecting the facility's updated name will be installed later this spring, and a dedication ceremony will be held to celebrate Mahoney's contributions. More details on the event will be shared in the coming months.
